The Joyful Journey FAQs
Q
1
Why is it the “Joyful Journey”?
A
1
Our process is designed to make the journey of culture change as joyful and effective as possible.  Clearly joy is lacking on every level of the existing long term care system.  Our purpose is to become more effective by creating the community that promotes joy, meaning, hope and dignity for all of us.

Q
2
What does Live Oak mean by culture?
A 2 Our culture consists of the values, practices and traditions that enable a person-centered community to flourish. A person-centered community empowers all members to participate in the decisions that affect their lives and work. The results are dignity, joy and increased organizational effectiveness.

Q 3 How much of a time commitment does this entail?
A
3
The first month the entire Home Team will participate in a two-day intensive and the Community Development Pioneers will have a full day seminar.  During each successive month, Home Teams and Community Development Pioneers will each meet for four hours.

Q
4
What is a Home Team?
A
4
Each participating organization has a Home Team whose responsibility it will be to champion the culture change program within the organization.

Q
5
Who is on the Home Team?
A
5
It minimally consists of the Administrator, the Director of Nursing, Director of Staff Development, the Activity Director, the Social Worker, at least one direct care worker and two Culture Change champions selected from within each organization.  Residents and family members are welcome to participate.

Q
6
What are Community Development Pioneers?
A
6
Community Development Pioneers are primarily members of the home team who because of their role in the new culture receive in-depth training in spreading community among residents and staff.  Minimally they include Activity Directors and Staff Developers.  All other members of the Hub (see below) are welcome to sign up for the Community Development Pioneers.

Q
7
What is a Hub?
A
7
A Hub is what we call the gatherings of all Joyful Journey participants.  It is the heart of culture change in our two counties. It consists of members of all the Home Teams as well as such long term care stakeholders as Ombudsmen, surveyors, advocates and others who want to promote culture change within their communities.

Q
8
Are CEUs granted for participation?
A
8
Yes. For details, click here.

Q
9
Is there home work?
A
9
Not in the traditional sense of the word.  The Joyful Journey teaches you to develop the community within your organization that enables the culture to take root and flourish.  The homework is the follow-through from our monthly sessions that enables you to put into practice what you learn.

Q
10
How long does Culture Change take?
A
10
Every one says, Culture Change is a journey and not a destination.  It is an ongoing process.  At the end of nine months your organization should have in place the tools, infrastructure and processes to support the culture that is grounded in person-centered community.

Q
11
Will a Live Oak Institute team member meet with our organization team before we sign up?
A
11
Yes, we would like to meet with the people who will comprise the Home Team and the next level supervisor to answer questions and work out the details of your participation. Please call to set up a meeting.
