Over its 30 years Live Oak Institute and, Debora and Barry Barkan, have received a variety of special acknowledgements and awards. Some of these are described below.  |

| Barry Barkan was inducted among 1400 leading social entrepreneurs in 44 countries to the Ashoka Fellowship in recognition and support of his vision to create the Elders Guild and transform the culture of aging. The Ashoka Fellowship provided a three year stipend to support his work. |

| Barry and Debora Barkan and Live Oak Institute were identified by the National Citizens Coalition for Nursing Home reform as Pioneers in Changing the Culture of Nursing Homes in America (other original pioneers included Charlene Boyd of Seattle’s Providence Mt. St. Vincent, Joanne Rader of Benedictine Institute and Dr. Bill and Jude Thomas of the Eden Alternative). It was from the first meeting of these original four pioneers that the culture change movement had its genesis. |

| Live Oak Institute was one of three winners of a Gulf+Western Major Grant Award in what was the largest open grant competition ever held in aging by an American corporation. Live Oak was one of three organizations with a demonstrated a model with the potential to impact the way America Ages selected for funding from among 940 applicants across the country. | ||||||

| San Francisco Mayor George Moscone, testified before a Congressional Committee that Live Oak Institute performed a “miracle” in turning around the culture and operations of Post Street Convalescent Hospital. | ||||||
